A Rising Tide: Benefit Screening

Support Housing Justice and the Center for ArtEsteem!

The Center for ArtEsteem invites you to their benefit screening of Cheryl Fabio's A Rising Tide at the New Parkway!

The Center for ArtEsteem (AHC) is hosting a benefit screening of Oakland filmmaker Cheryl Fabio's A Rising Tide to uplift the voices of Alameda County's unhoused residents. This event is in support of housing justice in Alameda County and the Center for ArtEsteem’s Oakland Super Heroes mural project. After the screening, join a lively panel discussion with housing experts to address this local crisis.

Join us for STONE SOUP, a collective meal to knit community and support the Self-Help Hunger Program!

We invite our housed neighbors to make a difference in our community. Come with fresh vegetables and canned goods for our neighborhood soup and an open heart to hear powerful stories of resilience.

Stone Soup is a fundraiser. Your $50 donation sustains the Self Help Hunger pantry, providing fresh produce and warm meals to over 500 people weekly. 80% of our clients are elders and 40% are unhoused or at risk.

SHHP is turning to the generous people of Oakland and Berkeley, to help us continue this collective effort of supporting our neighbors in need. We’re honored to be part of a powerful roster of history keepers for an evening of stories and exploration for many facets of local Bay Area history! We’re looking forward to sharing the stage with GEMS Oral Histories & Audio Storytelling, Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project , and the Oral History Center.

Dr. Saturu Ned, Black Panther Party Alumni Legacy Network co-director and Commons Archive advisor will join Sue Mark, Commons Archive founder/director to inspire future history-makers!

In collaboration with Self Help Hunger Program, we are celebrating both Mother’s Day and ‘Everyday is Black History Month' in a community event - Mothers of the Struggle.

The event will feature Resources for families in need, gift card for unhoused mothers, free (or sliding scale) food, a community flea market, speakers, open mic, performances and more!

Hosted by Self-Help Hunger Program, Oakland Youth for Restorative Justice, and North Oakland Restorative Justice Council, join us to collect much needed resources and support our unhoused neighbors - in memory of our lifelong North Oakland Freedom Fight Princess Beverly Williams. The event will feature a neighborhood pop-up holiday meal, music, and a care village at the 45th St Encampment.

Store Front Records presents… The Not So Open Mic & Marketplace!

Location: SPARC-IT PLACE, 3431 San Pablo Ave, Oakland (near the California Hotel)

Time: Saturday, October 29 NOON - 5PM

Come eat, meet and greet us and so many local vendors, food trucks and independent businesses!

The Storefront Market was founded towards the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic out of necessity. Local mom and pop businesses were struggling, artists and musicians were struggling. To help counteract these issues, Storefront Records founder Fantastic Negrito decided to create an open air market to give community members a place to gather, a place to sell their products, and a stage to showcase their talent. The Storefront Market is 100% free to vendors and visitors. We welcome guests with open hearts and open minds.

The HEAR HERE Community Billboard will be showcasing new videos of neighbor stories, along with opportunities to share your Oakland story!

13 Ways of Looking At Kasper’s

13 WAYS OF LOOKING AT KASPER’S

Location: Temescal Library, 5205 Telegraph Avenue

Saturday, October 15: Exhibition opening, 2pm-4pm

Join the opening of a photo and text exhibition that uses images and storytelling about a boarded-up hot dog stand, to change the way we view the urban landscapes that surround us. For the past 7 years, neighbors Malcom Ryder, a photographer, and Connie Hale, a writer, have been documenting the evolving murals that have covered the facade of local landmark.

At the opening, Malclom and Connie will talk about their process, showcase their behind-the-scenes process, and talk with Tion Torrence, the graffiti muralist and Black Panther Cub who has been leading the site’s mural production. Enjoy live music by Berkeley High School Jazz and come meet your neighbors!

The HEAR HERE Billboard will be on site sharing the artists word poems and engaging questions for community.

East Bay Redlined: REDEFINED

NEIGHBORHOOD SOUND WALK

Location: Golden Gate Library, 5606 San Pablo Avenue & Temescal Creek Park

Saturday, October 8: Meet at the library parking lot to join the walking tour at 2pm

Join us for a dynamic afternoon of listening, learning, and poetry. New neighbor and sound artist Gabby Wen will share their latest soundscape about the impacts of redlining in the Golden Gate neighborhood. Gabby has created site-specific audio collages made solely from local field recordings and will lead a short, intentional walk from the Golden Gate Branch Library to Temescal Creek Park to listen closely to the sounds of the neighborhood.

This event is part of a larger project coordinated by Thingamajigs, “a genre-crossing arts organization that promotes music and other art forms created with made and found materials or alternate tuning systems.”
